And so it went.
Rehearsing at night and pounding away at the proposal during the day. Leah also tried to keep up on her responsibilities for the theater at the same time. These included going through and making notes on a preliminary season recommendation from the play selection committee. And reviewing bids for someone to work on the parking lotâs many potholes. Plus, she still wanted to get someone in to test the Green Room for mold. Again.
But mostly, Leah worked on her proposal.
âYou busy?â Betsy asked one afternoon, poking her head into Leahâs office.
âSort of,â Leah said, as she looked up from the Artistâs Statement she was painfully crafting on her computer. In an attempt to beef up her skimpy first draft, she had added so many new ideas to what had been a simple, straightforward thesis that it now read like gibberish. Artsy gibberish, she thought, but gibberish nonetheless.
âYou know that line in The Importance of Being Earnest,â Leah continued. âAbout how people never talk anything but nonsense?â
Betsy shook her head. âMy headâs full enough already. I certainly donât need to start adding in bon mots from Oscar Wilde.â
âMe too,â Leah said as she stopped searching her brain for the line from the show. âWhatâs up?â
âTwo things,â Betsy said as she stepped fully into the small office. She held her ever-present âTo Doâ list in her hand. âI just wanted you to know that I havenât made the progress Iâd like to on the photo library. Just too many other things keep popping up. I know the Board was pushing to get it done soon.â
âNot a problem,â Leah said. âI can bring it up at the Board Meeting later this afternoon and take their temperature on the project as a whole.â
âThanks. Thatâs why I brought it up now. Before the meeting.â
âNo problem,â Leah said. âAnd?â
Betsy stared back at her. âAnd what?â she finally said.
âYou said there were two things.â
âOh, right,â Betsy said as she glanced down at her notes. âThe other thing is still no word from Marcy Hallberg.â
âMarcy Hallberg?â The name didnât immediately register with Leah.
âYes, the actress who skipped out on the costume fitting after the readthrough. Iâve left several messages for her. Carol still wants to get her in this week. Sheâs being typically insistent and persistent about it. As only Carol can be.â
âAnd Marcy is not responding to messages?â
Betsy shook her head. âNeither voice mail or email. Nothing on either front.â
âSheâs been in shows here in the past, right?â Leah asked.
Betsy nodded. âSeveral. Over many, many years.â
âDo you remember having any issues with her in the past?â
âNot a one,â Betsy said. âQuiet as a mouse, to be sure. But that oneâs not a prima donna. Not like others I could name.â
Leah considered this for a long moment. She looked at her screen and her proposal, which still needed lots and lots of words. Big words. Smart words. Probably more than she had in her head at the moment.
âDo you have Marcy Hallbergâs address?â
âIt will be on her audition form,â Betsy said.
